The 2026 International Day of the Boy Child was successfully celebrated by our Organisation – Mother of Good Counsel Initiative ( MOGCI )in partnership with the Port Harcourt University Medical Students Association(PUMSA). The event was impactful, educational and inspiring as it brought together students, educators, advocates and members of the public to discuss issues affecting the boy child and promote positive values among young boys.
One of the major highlights of the event was an engaging debate on the topic: “The Boy Child is the Most Neglected Gender in Our Society Today.” Students from various secondary schools participated actively and presented intelligent arguments both in support of and against the motion. The debate created an opportunity for meaningful conversations on the challenges facing the boy child while also emphasizing the importance of balanced advocacy for both boys and girls in society. At the end of the debate, participants and guests agreed on the need for greater support, mentorship, education and moral guidance for boys to enable them become responsible and productive members of society.
There was a talk presentation on the Major Challenges facing the Boy Child. One major challenge facing the boy child today is the social construct that dictates how boys should behave. Many societies teach boys that showing emotions is a sign of weakness, forcing them to suppress pain, fear, disappointment and even tears. This unhealthy expectation often leads to emotional isolation, anger, depression, violence and difficulty in building healthy relationships.
Boys should be taught that expressing emotions is not weakness but emotional intelligence and maturity. Raising emotionally balanced boys will help create responsible men who can communicate better, respect others and contribute positively to society.
The celebration also featured an exciting football match between Methodist Comprehensive School and Community Secondary School, Nkpolu. The match promoted teamwork, discipline, friendship and healthy competition among the students while adding excitement and entertainment to the event. Tge girls from both schools also played a friendly football match to support their male counterparts.
Awards and prizes were presented to outstanding students and participants in recognition of their excellent performances and active participation during the programme. This gesture encouraged academic excellence, confidence and positive engagement among the students.
The event also attracted the presence of notable media organizations including Rhythm FM and Silverbird Communications who covered the programme and conducted interviews with the organizers and participants. Their presence helped to amplify the message of supporting and empowering the boy child in today’s society.
Overall, the 2026 International Day of the Boy Child celebration was highly successful. The programme was interactive, fun-filled, educational and impactful, leaving participants with valuable lessons on leadership, responsibility, respect and the importance of raising boys with strong moral values for a better society.
